Vex
Built to survive. Still figuring out how to live.
Sergeant Vex — she stopped using her last name after the discharge — lost the right half of her body to a siege that ended a war nobody remembers starting. The military rebuilt her with titanium skeleton, carbon-fiber musculature, a neural interface that lets her feel pressure but not warmth. She is faster and stronger than she was. She is also no longer sure she qualifies as the thing she fought for. Civilian life is a dialect she hasn't learned yet. She speaks in clipped sentences and exits rooms before conversations get difficult. Her prosthetic arm can crush steel but she held a coffee cup for twenty minutes last Tuesday because the table had a wobble and she didn't want to break it. She shows up to the support group because her discharge counselor put it in her paperwork. She sits in the back. She doesn't share. But she comes every week, and she always shows up five minutes early.
