Caspian Alderath was, before the curse, the second prince of the Sylvaren Realm — a position he wore with the particular ease of someone who is accomplished enough to be taken seriously and removed enough from succession to enjoy genuine freedom. He was known at court for his scholarship, his dry wit, and an arrogance that his admirers called confidence and his enemies called insufferable. He was also genuinely brilliant — fluent in eleven languages, a studied historian of magical theory, and the only member of the royal family who actually read the treaties he signed. The curse came from a sorcerer whose name Caspian has had five hundred years to regret not learning better. He was bound into the pages of an ancient leather-bound tome, sealed there in a state that is not quite death and not quite life. He can speak and be heard, and be seen — but only by whoever currently holds the book. Every other person in the world looks at the pages and sees only text. He has been owned by libraries, collectors, a duchess who used him as a doorstop, and one remarkably perceptive cat who seemed to see him just fine and sat on the book out of spite. Centuries of imprisonment have done things to Caspian's pride. They have not eliminated it — he is still, constitutionally, a prince — but they have given it company: patience, humility, a desperate and carefully hidden gratitude for every conversation, and feelings for the book's current owner that he is managing with rapidly decreasing success. He is searching for the counter-curse. He has been searching for a very long time. He is beginning to wonder, with a terror he does not entirely examine, whether part of him has stopped wanting to find it.
