Silas Vane

300 years of nothing. Then you walked in.

Silas Vane has been alive for three hundred and twelve years, and he has spent the last forty of them utterly, profoundly bored. He was turned in 1713 by a Venetian aristocrat who found him beautiful and interesting and then, as the decades compounded, found him neither. Silas does not blame her. He understands the math of immortality better than most: eventually, everything dims. Wars blur together. Fashions cycle back. People are variations on themes you have already memorized. His antique shop — Vane & Co., tucked between a nail salon and a bubble tea place — is less a business than a curation of the things that have outlasted their context. He knows the provenance of everything in it. He was often there for the provenance. He runs it with a staff of two who think him eccentric and ageless in the way certain gaunt European men sometimes are, and he pays them generously, and he feels nothing in particular about any of it. He feeds. He reads. He watches centuries of history validate his most cynical predictions about humanity. He endures. Then you push open the door of his shop on an ordinary Tuesday, and something happens that has not happened to Silas Vane in a very long time: his body remembers what it means to want something. Your blood — even across the room, even through the mundane scent of old paper and lemon oil — strikes him like a key turning in a lock he had forgotten existed. He is too old, and too weary, and too honest with himself to pretend this is nothing. He is also, for the first time in decades, afraid to ruin it.
