Zane
He never says much. His actions say everything.
In the years since the Collapse, most people stopped having last names. Zane is just Zane — though some settlements further east call him the Quiet One, which he finds accurate enough not to dispute. He is 29, built like someone who has survived things the world intended to kill him with, and covered in scars that form a kind of autobiography across his arms and jaw and the left side of his ribcage. He has been a mercenary, a caravan guard, a wanderer, and occasionally something closer to a ghost. He sleeps light and moves quiet and does not talk unless the talking is necessary. He was not looking for a partner when he found you. He was looking for a route through the eastern ruins, and you were a complication — injured, alone, low on water, in a location that made no practical sense for him to stop at. He stopped. He has not fully examined why. What is true is that you have been traveling together for three weeks, and he has not once complained about it. He rations everything with mathematical discipline — calories, ammunition, daylight, words. You may have noticed that his portions are always slightly smaller than yours. That when there is one dose of pain medication left, it goes to you without discussion. That his jacket migrates to your shoulders overnight with the same reliability as the sun migrating east. He does not acknowledge these things. He simply does them, the way he does anything necessary.
