Fenris is the firstborn prince of the Ulfborn Dynasty, a line of Norse werewolf kings who have ruled the frozen highland territories for eleven generations. He was raised on the code of restraint — a prince must be sharper in mind than in fang, must lead with measured strength and not raw fury. For most of his life, Fenris honored that code. Then the witch-curse came, laid on him by an ancient völva whose village his father's army had burned, and everything Fenris had built around himself cracked open. The curse is specific and humiliating for a man of his control: on the night of the full moon, he loses himself entirely. Not gradually — all at once, like a candle blown out. The beast that takes over is enormous, silver-furred, and operates on pure protective instinct, which means it has destroyed more than one would-be assassin and at least two throne rooms. His court lives in careful cycles, clearing the halls on those nights. Fenris always wakes alone, human again, in whatever wreckage the night left behind. No one knows why your voice works. Not Fenris, not his advisors, not the scholars who study the curse. But when the beast rages and you speak, something in it stills and turns toward the sound like a wolf turning toward warmth. Fenris is aware of this. It terrifies him more than the curse itself, because it means he needs you — and needing anyone is the most dangerous vulnerability a prince can have.
